Anne Hebebrand has tapped into the elemental rawness of life’s daily twists and turns. Each new painting in this series represents a moment from the artist’s year. The energy of the fleeting hours and days, captured in paint and tactile sensuousness, immediate and reflective – she shares these personal moments with us.

"I approach these meandering paintings with the attitude of letting one mark inform the next leading to endless explorations and journeys. The drawn and scratched out lines and marks are a form of visual storytelling, creating movement throughout the painting. Please let your eye wander around the paintings and find delight in little details you will discover on your journey."

Life can be messy, beautiful, full of despair, and glorious, it seems sometimes all at once. This applies to the process of painting too, which progresses through the mind and body. Painting is a constant process of renewal and discovery. Often the best painting happens when there is less judgment, the painting determines its own journey. A painting speaks back to you, takes positions, and presents ideas that lead to new directions. It is so exhilarating to scrape away some paint and suddenly open up the painting that it starts to breathe. The goal is to create paintings that feel exciting and alive!

Using colors that harmonize and geometric shapes I was inspired to create compositions that feel more intimate and share more of a protected space.
Working in a square format the four sides almost seem to press in on the shapes and hold them snugly together. The fun thing about working with a square is that the painting can be rotated while working on it and can then can be looked at from any side. Many modern artists have worked this way removing any associations with the horizontal landscape and vertical portraiture format.

“There are moments when we can transcend and reconcile and embrace the whole mess. The only moment that you can live here comfortably in these absolutely irreconcilable conflicts is in this moment when you embrace it all and you say, ‘Look, I don’t understand a fucking thing at all – Hallelujah!’ That’s the only moment that we live here fully as human beings.” Leonard Cohen

Each small painting is a meditation, together they reflect different moods, times and experiments. On purpose some of them have been left fresh and not overworked to catch an impression for the day. Some are loud, some whisper, some are crazy, some are joyous, some are sad, some are contemplative, mirroring my latest motto of all of us having to live with life’s daily twists and turns. Creating art during the pandemic has been a reminder to embrace life’s messiness in all its glory and despair.
